How does money in more than one currency add up?

Each amount keeps its own currency, and the totals are converted at the rate that fits the figure.

The short answer

Money in two currencies does not add up by itself. A salary in one currency, savings in another and a mortgage in a third are three figures that mean nothing together until each is converted into one currency, and the honest conversion depends on what the figure is.

Something you spent is settled: it cost what it cost on the day, so it converts at that day's rate and never moves again. Something you still hold is live: its worth in your currency changes with the exchange rate, so it converts at today's rate. Add a settled figure at its day's rate and a live figure at today's, and the total is the one you would get by hand, with a spreadsheet and a lot of patience.

Two further choices follow. Pick one currency to read totals in, so there is one headline figure, not three. And keep the original currency on every amount, so nothing is rounded away and the figure can be read back as it was.

How Valunto does it

  • Every amount keeps the currency it is in: each transaction, holding, goal, bill and list item. National currencies and crypto are both covered.
  • Each person picks a base currency that their totals are converted to. "Total in" shows the same totals in another currency in one browser, without changing the base.
  • A transaction converts at the rate of its own date, so it counts the same however rates move later. A holding converts at today's rate, so net worth moves with exchange rates.
  • Rates update once a day: from the European Central Bank for national currencies, and from CoinGecko for crypto. The Currencies panel shows today's rate for each of your currencies against your base.
  • In a household, each member can have a different base currency, and the household total is right in each of them.
  • Cash flow shows the part of a period's change in net worth that transactions don't explain: updated values, market moves and exchange rates together.
