How does a household share its finances?

Each member keeps their own entries and currency; what is shared is split the way it is really owned, and each person sees what their role allows.

The short answer

A household's finances are not one pot. Two people can share a home, a mortgage and a savings goal while each is paid in a different currency, keeps an account the other never sees, and owns a different share of what they hold together. Managing that as one account hides who owns what; managing it as two accounts hides the shared life.

What works is to keep one record per person and mark what is shared. A shared asset or bill is split between the people who own it, so each sees their share and the household counts it once. What is private stays with its owner and counts only in their own totals. And each person's say over the record matches their part in it: some manage, some add, some only look.

How Valunto does it

  • People join a household through an email invitation, with one of three roles. An owner manages who is in the household and their roles, and can change other members' holdings, goals and purchase lists. A member adds and changes their own entries. A viewer sees what is shared and changes nothing.
  • Whatever a member adds is shared with the household unless they set it to "Only me". A private entry is seen only by them and counts only in their own totals.
  • Holdings, transactions and bills can be split between members, evenly, by percentage or by amount. Each share counts as that person's; the household total counts the entry once. Valunto doesn't keep track of who owes whom.
  • A goal can be for one member, for several, or for the whole household. A household keeps one shared budget, and each member a personal one.
  • "Filter by owner" narrows Overview, Net worth, Goals and Cash flow to the members you pick. Notifications show when someone adds or changes a transaction.
  • An owner can hand the household over to another member. A member can leave, keeping their own records. One person on their own uses all of this the same way, with no household to set up.
