How did the month go?
Income and spending over a period, compared with the one before, and how together they moved net worth.
Describes Valunto as of 28 October 2026
The short answer
A month is judged by two numbers, and only the second is honest on its own. What came in minus what went out is the net flow: whether the month added or took away. But net worth can move for reasons no transaction explains: a flat revalued, a market move, an exchange rate. The full account of a period is the starting figure, plus income, minus spending, plus that unexplained change, equals the ending figure.
The comparison is what gives the numbers meaning. A month against the month before says what changed; a month against the same month a year ago says what is seasonal. Spending by category says where the change came from, and money moved into savings is kept apart from spending so a good month looks like one.
How Valunto does it
- Cash flow adds up income and spending over a period (a month, a quarter, the year so far, the last 12 months, or dates you pick), and can compare it with the period before or with the same period a year earlier.
- It shows where the money came from and where it went, by category, and what was moved into savings.
- It shows each member's income, spending and net flow.
- It shows how the period moved net worth: the starting figure, plus income, minus spending, plus the change that transactions don't explain (updated values, market moves, exchange rates), gives the ending figure.
