What is the plan for this month?
A plan for one month: the income you expect and the spending in three groups, set against what actually happens.

The short answer
A budget is not a cage. It is a decision made once, while calm, so it does not have to be made forty times in the supermarket. It takes the income you expect this month and says where it goes before it goes.
Three groups are enough. Fixed is what stays about the same every month: rent, subscriptions. Flexible is everyday spending that moves: groceries, eating out. Non-monthly is the occasional cost you set money aside for each month so it does not land all at once: insurance, gifts, repairs. Whatever income is given to none of them is not assigned yet, and that is the figure to decide about.
The plan earns its keep against the month: each category's plan beside what was spent, and spending outside the plan shown as not budgeted rather than hidden. Next month starts as a copy of this one, adjusted where something changed.
How Valunto does it
- A budget is a plan for one month: the income you expect, and spending in three groups. Fixed is what stays about the same every month. Flexible is everyday spending. Non-monthly is occasional costs you set money aside for.
- A new month can start as a copy of an earlier one, adjusted where something changes.
- Each category shows what was planned against what was spent; spending outside the plan shows as not budgeted.
- The plan shows income not yet given to spending or saving, and any spending planned beyond income.
- A household can keep one shared budget, and each member a personal one.
- A past month without a plan still shows how it went.
