The short answer
Nobody overspends in one place. The money goes in small amounts to many places, and the bank statement lists them in the order they happened, which is the one order that says nothing. The question is answered by grouping: what did groceries cost this month, what did eating out, what did the car.
That takes one habit and one choice. The habit is recording each expense as it happens, in the currency it was paid in, with a date and a category. The choice is a short list of categories that matches how you actually spend, not a long one that matches a textbook. A category for savings keeps money moved aside from counting as spent.
In a household, who paid matters as much as what for. An expense two people share is split, so each person's spending is their own, and the month can be read per person as well as per category.
How Valunto does it
- Every income and expense is a transaction, recorded in the currency it was paid in, with a category, a date and an optional note.
- Categories come as a built-in set that is the same for everyone, plus the ones each person adds. A category can count as saving instead of spending.
- Transactions can be searched, filtered by type, dates, member and category, and sorted by date or amount.
- An expense can be split between members, evenly or by percentage. Each share counts as that person's spending; Valunto doesn't keep track of who owes whom.
- On the phone, a recent description fills in the rest of the form, a past transaction can be repeated, and an amount in another currency shows its converted value as you type. The list totals income, expenses and net for the period you pick.
- Transactions can be exported as a spreadsheet (CSV), with the columns you choose.
