Are we on track for what we're saving for?

A goal with a target and a date is held to a steady pace, and shows as on track, behind or achieved, with what is still needed each month.

The short answer

Saving for something is easier to start than to judge. The money goes in unevenly, some months more and some none, and the only question that matters is the one the total does not answer: at this rate, will it be there in time?

The answer needs a target amount, a start date and a date you want it by. Between them runs a steady pace, the straight line from nothing to the target. On any day, saved above the line is on track and below it is behind, and the gap divided by the months left is what each month now has to add. A goal without a date has no pace and only a total.

What counts toward a goal can be wider than a savings account: a transfer made for it, an expense that was really a step toward it, a holding kept for it and counted at its current value. Paying down a debt is the same shape, with the target at zero.

How Valunto does it

  • A goal has a target amount, a currency, a start date and, if you want one, a target date. It can be for one member, for several, or for the whole household.
  • Three things count toward a goal: amounts you add (or take out), transactions you count toward it, and holdings you count at their current value.
  • A goal can also follow a single debt, counting what has been paid down.
  • With a target date, the goal is held to a steady pace from start to end, and shows as on track, behind or achieved, with the amount still needed each month.
  • A chart shows what was saved month by month against that pace. From a goal's page, Valunto can estimate when the target would be reached.
  • Savings target, Emergency fund and Time to reach an amount can turn a result into a goal.
