How do I start?

Choose your currencies, then begin with sample data, an empty app and a short checklist, or a file you already have.

The short answer

The first hour decides whether a finance app gets used. Entering a year of history before seeing anything is how most people stop on day one. The better order is the opposite: see something real on the first screen, then add to it.

There are three honest ways in. Look around a made-up household first, to see what a filled app looks like before putting anything of your own in it. Start empty and add the few things that answer the question you came with. Or bring the spreadsheet you already keep, and let it be read rather than retyped.

Whichever way, the first entry should be the one that answers your own first question: what you can spend this month, where the money is going, or what you own and owe. The rest can wait a week.

How Valunto does it

  • When you sign up, you choose the currencies you use and your main one. Then you pick how to begin: with sample data (a made-up household, erased in one click), with an empty app and a short checklist, or by importing a file.
  • Setup also asks what you want to know first: how much you can spend this month, where your money is going, or what you own and owe. Valunto then opens on the page that answers it, and the checklist starts with that step. Settings changes where Valunto opens at any time.
  • Until a section has something to show, the Overview gives it one line: what it will show and how to start it.
  • Import reads a spreadsheet (Excel or CSV), a text file or a PDF statement, or cells pasted from a sheet. It looks for what you own, what you owe and what you're saving for, with up to 24 months of history. Every row it finds is shown for review before anything is saved, and anything it had to assume is marked. An import can be undone for 30 days.
  • A public demo household lets anyone look around before creating an account. Nothing in it is saved.
  • Accounts are created on the website; the phone app signs in to the same account.
